Diamond was reduced to replying, ‘I don’t know’ to a series of questions about how many subsidiary firms the bank had in countries such as the Cayman Islands and Isle of Man. But Umunna pointed out that Diamond knew all too well that he was referring to ‘tax avoidance’, not illegal evasion. Diamond preferred to categorise it as ‘tax efficiency’.
